Folowing this approach to policy management will help you and your customers...

Develop more effective IT policies
  • Clearly express our policy's goals and objectives
  • Standardize the approach to employee problem solving
  • Write concise policies that our employees will actually read

Improve risk coverage
  • Ensure compliance with both regulatory and industry best-practice frameworks
  • Establish a method for reporting, documenting, and communicating with our response to risks
  • Easily prepare documentation to satisfy auditors

Improve employee compliance
  • Empathize with our employees and write policies that enable rather than restrict them
  • Communicate and train employees using our policies
  • Avoid being perceived as "the police" by engaging our audience throughout the policy process

Establish baseline metrics to measure the financial impact of effective policy management

Baseline metrics will improve through:
  1. Cost of risk occurrences per year where no mitigating policy existed. The dollar amount spent remediating a risk occurrence that did not have a mitigating policy associated with it.
  2. Cost of consultancy fees for policy need identification. The amount of money that our organization would pay a third-party auditor to identify areas which require a policy creation or remediation.
  3. Cost of compliance related fines. The dollar value our organization has spent per year on compliance related fines. Being proactive with our policy management will help ensure we are compliant with all standards. (This will vary depending on organization).
Future goal of reduction is 50% per year. This includes:
  • Cost of risk occurrences per year where no mitigating policy existed ($)
  • Cost of consultancy fees for policy development ($)
  • Cost of compliance related fines ($)

Align with COBIT metrics to show the improvement in our policy management capability

COBIT 5 defines a range of enabling processes, activities, and metrics that help us evaluate the success of our policy management program. Refer to the following processes for metrics and guidelines relevant to policy management:
Future goal of reduction is 50% per year. This includes:
  • Percent of active policies, standards, and other enablers documented and up to date
  • Number of risk exposures due to inadequacies in the design or the control environment
  • Number of staff who attended training or awareness sessions
  • Percent of third-party suppliers who have contracts defining control requirements
